Jeffrey Grove, the Wieland Family Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art at The High Museum of Art in Atlanta, will serve as juror for the Halpert Biennial '09 national juried visual arts competition and exhibition.
Jeffrey Grove is the Wieland Family Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art at the High Museum of Art. Recent exhibitions include After 1968: Contemporary Artists and the Civil Rights Legacy (2008) and Morris Louis Now: An American Master Revisited (2006-2007). He is currently at work on the first U.S. museum exhibitions of Canadian artist Tim Gardner and the British video artists John Wood & Paul Harrison. Previous exhibitions include the first U.S. museum exhibitions of Michaël Borremans and Aernout Mik, as well as unique projects with Kelly McLane, Trenton Doyle Hancock, Torben Giehler, Benjamin Edwards, Julie Mehretu and Yutaka Sone. Grove holds a doctorate in art history from Case Western Reserve University (1999), an M.A. in art history and archaeology from the University of Missouri (1992), and a B.F.A. in industrial design from the University of Illinois, Urbana - Champaign, in 1985.

Prospectus
The Halpert Biennial '09 is a national juried visual art competition and exhibition that is open to all two-dimensional visual artists, who are over the age of 18 and currently residing in the United States. Any original, two-dimensional works of art including paintings, drawings, prints, photography, mixed media, and works using traditional and non-traditional materials are considered for the selection process.
- Entries and Fees
Each artist is allowed to enter a maximum of six (6) entries. Entries to the competition must have been created within the last five (5) years, however entries created within the last three (3) years are preferable. The non-refundable entry fee for The Halpert Biennial '09 is $10 per entry (maximum of $60). Fees will be accepted in the form of cash (for hand-delivered entries only), check or money orders made payable to TCVA, and by credit card (VISA and MasterCard only).

In addition, the Turchin Center for the Visual Arts (TCVA) will produce a full color brochure, which includes: a comprehensive artist listing; a statement from the Competition's Juror and a selection of images from the exhibition.
- Notice of Liability
All reasonable care and precaution will be taken in the handling, storing, and installation of materials and works submitted for this competition. Appalachian State University and the Turchin Center for the Visual Arts (TCVA) will provide insurance for the borrowed object(s) for the duration of the object's stay at the TCVA, provided that artist has completed all appropriate paperwork supplied by the staff of the TCVA. Insurance will not cover damage to the artwork due to poor construction or craftspersonship while creating work or poor shipping methods. The competition reserves the right to photograph any submitted work for publicity, promotional and archive purposes. Participation in the entry process constitutes understanding and acceptance of the conditions set forth above.
- Preparation of Selected Works
The Juror will determine the final number of works selected for exhibition during the selection process, but the exhibition should feature approximately 60 - 100 works of art. Works will be exhibited in Gallery A located within the TCVA. All accepted works must be framed and ready to hang.* Works may be shipped via UPS, Federal Express, Commercial Carrier or US Mail. Return shipping should be arranged prior to shipping work to the TCVA or during the exhibition time period. Unless return postage is provided by the end of the exhibition, the works will be returned COD in the manner in which they were shipped to the TCVA. Works will not be returned before the end of the exhibition. Works of art that do not comply with the above stated conditions may be disqualified.
* Please contact Brook Bower, Project Director with inquires regarding works that may have special framing and/or hanging requirements. Entries will not be disqualified should the work have special installation requirements.
- Sales
Sales are encouraged as the program has a strong history of sales to private and corporate collections. All sales are subject to 40% gallery commission.

You may submit your application and entry fee by one of three methods, as detailed below:
- By Mail
Complete the Halpert Biennial '09 Entry Form and mail it, with the non-refundable entry fee of $10 per entry (maximum of 6 entries), in the form of a check or money order made payable to TCVA, or credit card (VISA and MasterCard only) to the address listed in the delivery information.
- By Phone
Call the Turchin Center for the Visual Arts (TCVA) at (828) 262-3017 and pay the non-refundable entry fee by credit card (VISA and MasterCard only). Please call Tuesday - Thursday 10am - 6pm, Friday 12 - 8pm, or Saturday 10am - 6pm.
- By Fax
Complete the Halpert Biennial '09 Entry Form and fax it to (828) 262-7546 in Attention to Brook Bower (VISA and MasterCard only).
- Submit Images
You may submit images of your work by one of three methods, as detailed below. Please note that slides will no longer be accepted for review. If recommendations are needed for slide scanning, please direct inquires to Project Director, Brook Bower at greeneab@appstate.edu.
- Submit images online
Upon the processing of your entry fee you will receive instructions for entering the Halpert Biennial '09 Artists Area at www.turchincenter.org, where you may modify your application information and upload your digital images. Instructions will be provided online to lead you through this process.
- Submit images by mail in digital format
Please send, by mail, digital images on a CD or DVD. Images must be in a .jpg, .psd, or .pdf format with a maximum of 1800 pixels in height or width. Please format the file name as follows: "LastName_Title.jpg". Do not send images imbedded in a Word document or PowerPoint presentation. If you wish to have your CD / DVD returned to you, include a self-addressed stamped envelope (SASE) for the return of the CD / DVD or other materials. Send your completed entry form and CD/DVD to the address listed below under Delivery Information. Images not corresponding to the formatting sizes may not be accepted.
- Submit images via email
Entries (entry form and images) can also be accepted via e-mail at greeneab@appstate.edu. It is highly recommended that credit card information not be sent via email due to security issues.
